The West Sussex market town of Midhurst, on the River Rother, is located in the Chichester district of the county about 12 miles north of Chichester. The town can trace its history back to the final years of the twelfth century and was first recorded in 1186 when known as Middeherst, which means ‘Middle wooded hill’. The ‘County History of Sussex’ recorded that races were held at Midhurst as far back as 1729. They were of small account and came to an end after the 1738 meeting.
